We play a leading role in marking Hebrew Language Day, יוֹם הָעִבְרִית (in full: יוֹם הַלָּשׁוֹן הָעִבְרִית), an annual tribute to Hebrew held on 21 Tevet, the Hebrew birthday of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda (or on a nearby weekday, if 21 Tevet falls on a weekend). The Israeli government established the day as part of a November 18, 2012, resolution aimed at bolstering knowledge of and connection to the language, both in Israel and abroad, in recognition of the importance of Hebrew to Israeli and Jewish identity and culture. Every year, more media outlets, organizations, and communities join in commemorating the day. The Academy marks the occasion with diverse activities and initiatives that reach hundreds of thousands of Hebrew speakers. Over the years we have sponsored well-attended lectures and other events; produced and disseminated engaging educational posters; held a vote for Word of the Year; published special posts on our social-media channels; and partnered with others to present content about the language in the media and on consumer products (e.g., milk cartons). In addition, our Hebrew website offers an abundance of programming, including videos, quizzes, lesson plans, and lectures, free of charge.
