Hebrew Language Day, established by a 2012 government resolution, celebrates the language annually on Eliezer Ben-Yehuda’s birthday, 21 Tevet. This year the date falls on Shabbat, so we will instead mark the event on Thursday, January 8 (19 Tevet), with radio spots, special posts on our social-media channels, and more (see below). Celebrate Hebrew with us!

Word of the Year – מִלַּת הַשָּׁנָה
Elections have begun for the Word of the Year! Of the 10 popular contenders selected from among the hundreds of proposals we received from the public, which one most deserves the title? Vote and have a say! We will announce the winner on Hebrew Language Day.

Hebrew Championship 5786
Try out our Hebrew Championship! Each round of play presents questions drawn at random from a large pool, on various topics in the field of Hebrew. Response time affects your score. The five winners will each receive a gift voucher for צומת ספרים, courtesy of the bookshop chain.

אוֹלִימְפִּיָּאדַת הַלָּשׁוֹן הָעִבְרִית לַנֹּעַר
Hebrew Language Olympiad for Youth
|

|
The Hebrew Language Olympiad for Youth, an international competition of linguistic prowess, will begin on Sunday, January 4, with the online release of the question set. Contestants must submit their answers by January 20. The finalists will compete in person on Friday, March 13, at Tel Aviv University (foreign residents – at an institution in their area). The contest is designed for students in grades 7–12 but open also to younger aspirants; participation is free. Register in advance to receive the questions upon publication. The Olympiad is an initiative of the Department of Hebrew Language and Semitic Linguistics at Tel Aviv University, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and AHL. Winners receive a certificate, a cash prize, and a scholarship.
